I like this song. It was in the old Mormon Hymnal (the dark blue one), but not in the newer one with the green cover and I wish it had made the cut because it is one of my favorite "churchy" songs. I like the bit that says "here's my heart, oh, take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above". Sometimes when I feel like I don't measure up to a certain standard and that I am not holy enough I listen to this song and remember that I have a loving Heavenly Father who knows my heart. What do you think? Does it remind you too much of folksy scenes from "O, Brother Where Art Thou"? I included links to the Sufjan Stevens version and another one that is more in tune with a church choir. The first time I heard this song it was in a summer school session of seminary. I had to take a summer school session of seminary after I graduated from high school so I could upgrade my 3-year seminary diploma for a legitimate four-year one. Somewhere between freshman year and senior year I had seminary before lunch. In other words, somewhere between my freshman and senior year I had a two hour lunch, but I cannot remember what year that was.
4 sign your pity:
David and I have a super awesome duet version of this song and we have whored it out (can you whore out a hymn?) at every opportunity for about the last 5 years. It's a good one.
I love the Sufjan version. And I like it for the same reason you do. This and Be Still My Soul.
Wizzle, you used the phrase "whore out" a few weeks ago on facebook and I have thought of it several times since then. I think it is a very clever way of presenting an idea, suggestion, or in today's case a work of art without sounding smug, so yes you can say it about this hymn or anything you want.
I like this hymn too. I'm curious why it didn't make the cut. Off the subject here, but were you as awe as I was with all the amazing black & white photography in the Sufjan clip? Watching it made me wish I could be a professional photographer...
